Tips to find cheap airfare deals for your next trip!

We all want cheap airfare deals, or to know we’re getting a good deal when it comes to making any purchase. So how do we get good deals on flights? Let me start by saying there isn’t just one way to do it and every method may not work for everyone. There are a lot of variables, so what we’ll do is give you some tips and suggestions on how you can land your next flight deal.
Flights should be treated as stocks, the values fluctuate often and you should research them before purchasing to get the best deal. The first tip for snagging a deal is to immediately research the flight upon the conception of the idea of taking a trip. Reason being, this is the furthest out to research the flight and in most cases the earlier you buy the flight the better. Timeline does matter, so depending on how far out you check it may not be the cheapest but typically 6 weeks to 3 months out you can get an idea of the lower end of the flight price.

💡Tip 1. Put your trip dates in Google Flights and Hopper App. Find a flight and turn on the notifications.

A couple of platforms I use to do my research are Google Flights and the Hopper app. These are typically the first two resources I use when beginning to search for flights and I’ll tell you why. Google flights researches multiple airlines at once and not only that, it will pair the two best prices for you for each leg even if it’s different airlines. So you’re not confined to getting the best price from one airline, you’re actually able to pair different airlines to really get the best valued round trip price.
Google will also list several other flight options, giving you options and prices for different scenarios whether certain times or airlines may not work for you. You also have the option to use filters for times, stops, airlines, and more! There’s also options to look at prices from different angles to see if rearranging your days could land you a better deal. It even compares the trip you’ve selected to the average cost for that specific destination. And last, but certainly not least, it allows you to track the flight by receiving email notifications whenever the price changes, whether it increases or decreases. And the honorable mention feature is being able to put in dates and see destination suggestions for the best value flights or popular places to visit during that time. Im hoping that Google will develop this site into a stand alone app.

The Hopper app is another resource that allows you you to compare prices,similar features to the ones described for Google Flights, but presented differently in addition to other features. The feature I value most from Hopper is the price prediction. After you select the dates for your flight and find the one your interested in, Hopper shows a price prediction for the flight informing you on how long they think the prices will vary, when and how much it’s likely to go up, and what the price could possibly be up until departure.
Now these are all predictions and as I stated before, flights should be treated like stocks as far as pricing and value. This is a helpful tool to get an idea on price points. It also shows you average trip prices for your destination, so you could consider changing your dates if you have flexibility, to get a better price.

Hopper also has the option to receive notifications when the flight you want to keep an eye on changes in price. The difference with this app is that it gives guidance on what you should do based on the price prediction. So it may tell you to wait to get better price or buy now because you likely won’t see a better price. Although it’s only predictions I consider it a very handy tool to have in my back pocket. If not for anything else it helps me keep track of flights I need to purchase.

Also there is a relatively new feature that they’re promoting, the price drop guarantee. If you book your flight through the Hopper app, they’ll continue to monitor the price of the flight for you and if it continues to drop they’ll credit you the difference. I haven’t personally used the feature yet but sounds like something that’s worth trying! In summary, Google Flights and Hopper are my go to resources when I start my search.

💡Tip 2. Sign up for those pesky emails! Be a rewards member.

Are you signed up for rewards for your favorite airlines or a frequently traveled airline? Why not? This is also a good resource for finding flights. Chances are when you sign up for the rewards you also get the emails about flight specials that the airline has from time to time. This is a good way to build loyalty points and sometimes spark an idea for a trip. You’ll have a steady feed of the airlines most serviced cities, which can help you choose an airline when it comes time to pick one for a specific destination.
I have my preference for what airlines I like to use, but when it comes to booking flights I’m loyal to only value. So create a profile with any airline that you’ve ever flown with to take advantage of any perks that may come along with the account. It’s good to use sites like airfare watchdog and airfare spot to search for deals.

Lastly, it’s also good to follow and subscribe to travel cites such as World Citizens Travel and others like airfare spot or escape Houston. Following sites on social media will give you real time updates on deals that are found, sometimes abnormal itineraries that are significantly priced less than the normal flights like glitch deals. You have to be prepared to jump on these deals pretty quickly! There’s a lot of different strategies to use, each one has it’s own benefits. With a mixture of a couple you can surely find some great deals.

Bonus Tip💡: Before you make your purchase, if you feel the need to check more sources for reassurance try putting your itinerary in a site like airfare watchdog or Priceline to compare prices.
