The Tale of Two Islands
My trip to Belize landed me in San Ignacio and the island of San Pedro, splitting the time between the two. The beach in Old City Belize is a treat as well as there are plenty of activities there to elevate your experience.
San Ignacio
I learned about the history of Belize by participating in a tour of the Maya Ruin Xunantunich. I’ve come to enjoy exploring the different ruins in different areas of the world and learning about the Mayan culture and how they all connect. This one was one of the more interesting sites I’ve seen. I zip lined through a jungle on a tree top course at Jaguar Paw. The views from the concourse were beautiful and the exhilaration from the zipping didn’t disappoint. As for night time we dined in family owned restaurants, in which there is no shortage of, and we also went to the Princess Casino for dinner and some games. On the the last day before taking a water taxi to the next island we had breakfast at Oasis Restaurant, a must to try if you can squeeze it in!
While in San Ignacio we resided in Maya Bella Hotel. We had a great stay, we were welcomed by members of the family that owned and operated it and greeted with some pours of the local rum. The rooms were nice and tidy and they had plenty of space for us to relax and congregate.
San Pedro
Exploring this island was fun. They travel by golf carts which was an intriguing concept for us. We went on a snorkeling trip to see the 2nd largest reef in the world. Belize is a very popular destination for divers for that reason. We swam with sharks and got an opportunity to swim around the reef. Later that night we bounced around to some of the bars and clubs and indulged in street food from food carts that were set up near the dock that served as a courtyard of sorts for people to fellowship.
This trip was simple, yet effective. I enjoyed the islands and had lot of fun on our many adventures. Belize is definitely on my recommendation list. I plan to go back to experience their carnival celebration!
