We felt like this is an important topic to discuss as it seems like people are dealing with this crisis in extremes. Either they are on the side of “I”m going to keep doing me” or “it’s literally the end of the world”. As World Citizens we believe we have a responsibility to not only educate and connect through travel, but to care and show some concern about the communities that we are visiting. It’s not just a vacation destination….it is someone’s home. While we are all about a good flight deal (and we’ve seen some really tempting ones!), we need to protect our brothers and sisters around the world right now who may not be exposed to this yet. Sometimes we see things in a bubble and only think about how it affects us but in times like these, what we do affects the people around us. Just because a country is not a hot spot for the Coronavirus at the moment, doesn’t mean all of us should go and potentially infect others who may not have the resources to fight it off after we leave and the vacation is over.
If you are still interested in traveling and capitalizing on the flight deals, we suggest booking travel towards the end of the year as we are hopeful this will work itself out sooner rather than later. Many airlines have been flexible with their cancellation and reschedule policies to encourage people to continue traveling (policies by airline). You also want to make sure that the country you plan on visiting doesn’t have travel restrictions (here’s a list by country). Make sure you understand what your options will be before purchasing the flight because at this point not all airlines are providing refunds and rescheduling has a time limit. You want to make sure you’ll be able to take the trip eventually and the policies are continuing to change. For all we know at the moment they could ban all non-critical travel. Consider the risk in whatever you decide. Is the risk worth the reward?
If we all do our part in isolating and social distancing right now, we can help stop the rapid spread of COVID-19 and eventually travel to our dream destinations once this is resolved. But remember right now the priority is to educate yourselves on the virus itself and what risks come along with any potential plans. Play it smart, play your part. And whatever you do….WASH YOUR HANDS! May the flights be in your favor! Safe travels!
